Miss Sarah Addison is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon in Birmingham with extensive experience in hernia diagnosis and repair. She sees private patients at The Priory Hospital and HCA The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham, and holds an NHS consultant post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Miss Addison treats all common types of hernia in both men and women, including groin hernia (inguinal hernia), umbilical hernia, femoral hernia, incisional hernia, Spigelian hernia, ventral hernia and stomal hernia. She understands that a hernia can cause pain, discomfort and worry, and that many patients want a clear assessment and straightforward advice on whether surgery is needed.

Miss Addison carries out hernia repair using both open and keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques, and will recommend the most suitable approach based on the type and size of the hernia, the patient’s general health and their day-to-day activity. She is experienced in both mesh and non-mesh methods of repair. Keyhole hernia surgery typically means a shorter stay in hospital, less discomfort after the operation and a quicker return to normal activities.

Miss Addison graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1996 and completed her higher surgical training in general and colorectal surgery across the West Midlands in 2009. During her training, she was awarded a travelling fellowship to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis, USA, where she developed her skills in advanced laparoscopic surgery. She joined the colorectal department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2018.

In addition to hernia repair, Miss Addison treats a range of bowel and colorectal conditions including bowel cancer, diverticular disease, haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissure, anal fistula and pilonidal cysts (pilonidal sinus disease).
